When Ice Meets Fire

Recap: Melisandre arrives at Dragonstone and informs Daenerys about the prophecy of the “Prince that was Promised”. On her suggestion, Dany invites Jon Snow to Dragonstone. Tyrion plans the conquest of Westeros in which Dorne would lay siege to King’s Landing while the Unsullied would attack Casterly Rock. In King’s Landing, Cersei invites the Lords of Westeros and asks them to support her against the Targaryen Queen. In Oldtown, Sam uses an experimental and forbidden treatment on Jorah in order to cure his Greyscale. In Winterfell, Jon receives letters from Sam and Daenerys. He decides to accept Dany’s invitation and departs Winterfell, leaving Sansa in charge. In Riverlands, Arya is reunited with Hot Pie at an inn and learns about the current affairs and status of Winterfell. She decides to go to Winterfell instead of King’s Landing. On her way home, she is briefly reunited with Nymeria who refuses to come back. On their way to Sunspear, the Greyjoy Fleet is attacked by Euron’s Iron Fleet. Euron captures Ellaria and Tyene, as well as his niece Yara, while Theon jumps overboard and escapes.

The Narrow Sea

A bunch of Ironborn find Theon floating and pull him aboard their ship. One of them asks if Yara is dead. Theon replies that she was captured by Euron. He lies that he tried to save her, but the Ironborn says that he wouldn’t be with them if he tried.

King’s Landing

Euron Greyjoy arrives in the capital and parades his captives on the streets as he marches towards the Red Keep. He taunts Yara about Theon’s cowardice while reveling in his victory. The residents of King’s Landing humiliate the captives by throwing rotten fruits at them and calling them “whores” and “murderers”. Eventually, Euron enters Cersei’s court.

Euron presents Ellaria and Tyene as a “gift” to the queen from him and all the loyal subjects from the Iron Islands. He says that this is justice for Myrcella. Ellaria spits at Cersei’s feet. Cersei ignores that and tells Euron that he has proven himself the greatest captain on the fourteen seas and a true friend to the crown. Euron says that she deserves more than a friend. Cersei says that he deserves a proper reward for his heroism, but there is only one reward that he wants. (He wants Cersei.) Cersei agrees to give him what he wants, but only after the war is won. She then proceeds to make him the commander of her naval forces. Euron likes the fact that the people love him and are cheering for him. Jaime says that the same mob spat at Cersei during her Walk of Shame and the same mob will cheer to see Euron’s head mounted on a spike if he turns on the crown. Euron replies that the mob will cheer whether it’s his head or Jaime’s, since they just like severed heads. He then frankly asks Jaime if Cersei has any particular sexual preferences. Jaime tries not to express his anger in public, while Euron bows before Cersei and leaves with Yara.

Cersei visits the cell where Ellaria and Tyene are chained to the wall opposite each other. Cersei recalls the day when Ser Gregor and Oberyn fought each other in a trial by combat. She recalls the sound of Oberyn’s skull cracking and the sound of Ellaria’s scream. She praises Oberyn’s skill with the spear and tells Ellaria that he could’ve walked away unharmed and left Gregor to die. However, Oberyn decided to taunt Gregor, and now he’s dead while the Mountain is stronger than ever. Cersei then remembers how she raised Myrcella on her own since she couldn’t bear seeing her daughter in another woman’s arms. She says that Ellaria cannot understand the pain of losing a daughter. She then starts praising Tyene’s beauty and talking about how she could make Ellaria feel the same pain that she felt when Myrcella was killed. She talks about how she contemplated having Ellaria’s or Tyene’s head crushed by Ser Gregor, but it didn’t feel right. Suddenly, she kisses Tyene on lips and Ellaria realizes that Cersei coated her lips with poison. Cersei reveals that Qyburn found out about the Long Farewell, the poison Ellaria used to kill Myrcella in the same fashion. She also reveals that Tyene will die in front of Ellaria and the guards will make sure that she stays alive even after her daughter is a rotting corpse.

Later, Jaime is drinking wine when Cersei enters the room and starts kissing him. Jaime refuses initially, but lets her go down on him afterwards. Following a night of incestuous sex, Cersei is woken up in the morning by a knock on the door. Jaime asks her not to answer the door, since they’re both naked and whoever sees them in this condition would know that she slept with her brother. Cersei gets up anyway and puts on a robe. She replies that the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms can do as she pleases and proceeds to open the door. Cersei’s maidservant promptly notices Jaime in the bed, but ignores him and informs the queen that the visitor from Braavos has arrived. Cersei acknowledges the message and requests fresh sheets for the bed.

The Iron Bank wants what it’s due.

The visitor from Braavos turns out to be Tycho Nestoris of the Iron Bank. He offers his condolences to Cersei for the death of her son. Cersei replies that the Iron Bank didn’t send him to offer condolences. Tycho then congratulates her accomplishment of becoming the queen by crushing the “superstitious” and subversive Faith Militant. Cersei denies her actions and calls the destruction of the Sept of Baelor a “tragic accident”. Tycho replies that sometimes tragedies are necessarily to restore order and rational leadership. Cersei quickly gets to the point: The Iron Bank wants its gold back. Tycho recalls that Tywin didn’t mince words either. The crown is in considerable debt and Cersei is engaged in a conflict on several fronts. Wars can be expensive and the crown has empty vaults. Their wealthiest allies, the Tyrells, are now enemies. Cersei is surrounded by rivals for the Iron Throne and the Iron Bank wants to bet on a winner.

Cersei replies that she has drawn first blood. The Dornish leaders are in her captivity. Euron Greyjoy’s armada owns the Narrow Sea, and Euron is loyal to the crown. Tycho replies that Daenerys, on the other hand, has three full grown dragons. Cersei says that they might have a solution for the dragons. She then starts questioning the Iron Bank’s interest in Daenerys. Dany’s opposition to the slavery has hurt the profits of those who invested in slave trade. Moreover, she considers herself more of a revolutionary than a monarch. Cersei asks how the Iron Bank feels about dealing with revolutionaries. Lannisters have a history of paying their debts, but the same can’t be said about former slaves or the Dothraki or the dragons. She asks Tycho to remain in King’s Landing for a fortnight and promises that when he returns to Braavos, her debt will be paid in full.

Winterfell

Sansa is watching people deliver wheat. Maester Wolkan informs her that they have 4000 bushels. According to Lord Royce, that’s enough food to feed the current occupants of the castle for a year or more. Sansa asks about the longest winter in the past hundred years. Wolkan says that he can check Maester Luwin’s records, since he kept a copy of every raven scroll. Sansa says that they don’t have enough food in case the armies come back to defend the Winterfell. She suggests that they should build up their grain stores and ask every keep in the North to deliver their food to Winterfell. It can be returned if it’s unused by the end, but if the entire North flees to Winterfell, they won’t have time to bring wagonloads of grain with them. She promptly asks Maester Wolkan to see to this.

While they are walking, Sansa notices a smith creating armor. She asks Lord Royce if they are covering the breastplates in leather for protection against the cold. Royce replies that they should be and decides to oversee the process. As Sansa and Baelish continue walking, Baelish comments that command suits her. He starts talking about how their entire attention is directed towards the threat beyond the Wall and none towards Cersei. Sansa says that everybody knows how dangerous Cersei is.

Littlefinger presents her with two possibilities: the dead will win and there won’t be anything to do after, or the living will win and they will have to deal with the next threat that comes for them. He asks her not to fight in the North or the South, but to fight every battle everywhere in her mind. Everyone can be a friend or an enemy, and every possible series of events is happening at once. If she lives that way nothing will surprise her, since everything that happens will be something that she’s seen before. Suddenly, a guard arrives and asks her to come to the gate. Sansa arrives at the gate to find that Bran and Meera have reached Winterfell. Bran greets her and she gives him an emotional hug.

After their reunion, Bran and Sansa are in the Godswood. Sansa wishes Jon were with them, and Bran says that he needs to speak to him. Sansa says that Bran, being Ned Stark’s last living trueborn son, is now the Lord of Winterfell. Bran replies that he can never be Lord of Winterfell, since he’s the Three-Eyed Raven. Sansa doesn’t understand, and Bran cannot explain either. He tells her how he can see everything, past and present, although it’s just fragments. He says that he needs to learn to see better and be ready when the Long Night comes again. Sansa still doesn’t understand what he’s saying. Bran tells her that he is sorry about everything that happened to her. He recalls the exact circumstances of the night when Sansa married Ramsay. Sansa is disturbed by this and leaves, while he stays back.

Oldtown

Archmaester Ebrose examines Jorah’s skin by pressing against it with a metal prod. He asks if it hurts. Jorah replies that it hurts less than before. Ebrose remarks that the infection no longer appears to be active, which would be unusual and unlikely. He speculates that the entire upper layer of the skin could have been debrided and the underlying region could have been treated with some sort of unguent, but Jorah strongly denies any knowledge of such treatment and says that it must have been the rest and the climate. Ebrose declares that Jorah is no longer infected and free to go. He asks Sam to meet him in his study in the evening and leaves.

Man cures Greyscale with some rest and climate! Maesters hate him!!
Man cures Greyscale with some rest and climate! Maesters hate him!!

Sam asks where Jorah would go after this. Jorah says that he surrendered himself to the sickness the moment he found out, but Daenerys convinced him otherwise, so he’ll be going back to serve her. He thanks Sam for treating him and hopes to see him again in the future. Sam shakes his hand and leaves him.

In the evening, Sam meets the Archmaester in his study. Ebrose grills Sam about his decision to treat Jorah. Sam acknowledges that nobody asked him to treat Jorah, that Ebrose expressly forbade any attempt to do so, and that he went through with it anyway. Ebrose reminds Sam about why he forbade such a dangerous procedure. Sam could’ve infected himself and others, possibly the entire Citadel, but he didn’t. He succeeded where many Maesters, even those who are experts in healing, failed. Ebrose asks him how he did it. Sam replies that he just read the books and followed instructions. Ebrose tells him that he should be proud since he saved a man’s life. He then asks Sam to follow him to a table full of manuscripts and scrolls and orders him to make copies of everything. Sam is a bit disappointed, since he was expecting a reward, but Ebrose says that his reward is not being immediately expelled from the Citadel.

“You could have died from infection—or worse, expelled from the Citadel. Now get to work.”

Dragonstone

Jon Snow and Davos arrive on the shore of Dragonstone with their soldiers. They are received by Tyrion and Missandei. Jon “the Bastard of Winterfell” and Tyrion “the Dwarf of Casterly Rock” greet each other and reminisce about their last meeting at the Wall. Tyrion also greets Davos who fought on the opposite side in the Battle of Blackwater Bay. Tyrion introduces Missandei as the queen’s most trusted advisor. Missandei asks them to hand over their weapons. The Dothraki standing beside them take their weapons as well as their boat. Missandei then leads the way towards the castle.

Welcome to Dragonstone. Now surrender your weapons.
Welcome to Dragonstone. Now surrender your weapons.

Jon and Tyrion start talking about the things that happened after their first meeting, such as Tyrion’s marriage to Sansa (which was not consummated, as Tyrion reminds Jon), Jon becoming King in the North, and Tyrion becoming the Hand to the Targaryen Queen. Jon says that his bannermen don’t approve of his decision to meet Daenerys. Tyrion says that he would have advised the same, since Stark men don’t fare well when they travel south in his experience. Jon says that he’s not a Stark. Suddenly, he and Davos duck when Drogon flies over them. Tyrion helps Jon get up and mentions that one never really gets used to the sight of dragons.

Melisandre watches from the cliff as they walk towards the castle. Varys arrives and asks why she didn’t want to meet Jon, since she was the one who asked them to summon the King in the North. Mel tells him that she did not part on good terms with Jon or Davos. She would only be a distraction if she stayed. She reveals that she is going to Volantis. Varys advises her not to return to Westeros, but she says that she will return, since she has to die in this strange country, just like him.

Ice and fire together.
Ice and fire together.

Missandei escorts Jon and Davos into the throne room and introduces her queen (with a long list of titles). Davos introduces Jon as the King in the North. Dany starts by addressing Jon as “my Lord”, but Davos interjects and reiterates that Jon is King in the North. Dany recalls that the last King in the North was Torrhen Stark who bent the knee to Aegon Targaryen and swore fealty to House Targaryen in perpetuity. She assumes that Jon is there to bend the knee. When Jon replies that he won’t bend the knee, she accuses him of breaking faith. He reminds her that her father—Aerys “the Mad King” Targaryen—burned his grandfather and uncle—Rickard and Brandon Stark—alive. Dany accepts that her father was an evil man and asks for forgiveness and to not judge her by her father’s crimes. House Stark and House Targaryen were allies for centuries and those were the best centuries the realm had seen, with a Targaryen on the Iron Throne and a Stark serving as Warden of the North. She asks him to honor the historical pledge his ancestors made to her house.

Jon agrees that she is not guilty of her father’s crimes. He is also not beholden to his ancestors’ vows. He’s only there because they need each other’s help. Dany thinks that with three dragons and a Dothraki army, she doesn’t need his help. Davos agrees that she doesn’t need help to defeat Cersei, since she could storm King’s Landing whenever she wants. Since she hasn’t done that, Jon thinks that she’s better than Cersei. However, in reality, they are all children playing at a game screaming that the rules aren’t fair. Dany expresses her displeasure to Tyrion at Jon refusing to call her queen, refusing to bend the knee, and calling her a child. Tyrion tries to explain that Jon is calling all of them children, a figure of speech.

Jon says that everyone will die if they don’t defeat the enemy to the north. Dany calls him the enemy to the north, but Jon replies that he is not the enemy, the dead are. He tries to convince Tyrion that the Army of the Death, the White Walkers, and the Night King are all real. If they get past the Wall, everyone is finished.

Dany starts talking about how Robert Baratheon sent assassins to kill her after she was born on Dragonstone. She wonders if Ned Stark knew about the assassins. She spent her life in foreign lands. So many men tried to kill her. She was chained, betrayed, raped, and defiled. The only thing that kept her standing was faith in herself. The world hadn’t seen dragons in a long time until her children were born. The Dothraki crossed the sea for her. She was born to rule the Seven Kingdoms, and she will. Jon tells her that she’ll be ruling over a graveyard if they don’t defeat the Night King.

Tyrion says that the war against Cersei has already begun. They can’t be expected to help Jon fight whatever is coming from beyond the Wall. Davos realizes that Tyrion doesn’t believe them, but just like how destiny brought Dany back to Westeros, destiny also made Jon a King in the North. Jon brought the wildlings and the Northmen together. He was named Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch and later King in the North. And this wasn’t due to any birthright, since Jon is a bastard. People chose him as their king because they believed in him. He faced all those things that Tyrion and Dany don’t believe in. Davos goes on to mention that Jon took a knife in the heart and gave his life, but Jon stops him before he can reveal Jon’s resurrection. Davos composes himself and reiterates that it doesn’t matter whose skeleton sits on the Iron Throne if they’re all dead.

Tyrion steps in and says that if it doesn’t matter then Jon might as well kneel. If Jon kneels and helps Daenerys defeat Cersei, Dany will help Jon protect the North. Jon says that they don’t have that kind of time. Tyrion replies that it takes no time to swear allegiance. Jon refuses to do so, since he doesn’t know Dany. Her claim rests entirely on the fact that her father was a king, and Jon’s father fought to overthrow that king. Jon would not go against the people who elected him as their king. Dany points out that since she’s the rightful queen of the Seven Kingdoms, the King in the North will be in open rebellion against her if he refuses to bend the knee. Suddenly, Varys enters the throne room in a hurry and whispers in Dany’s ear that he has some grave room. Dany dismisses her guests and asks for them to be sent to their room. Before leaving, Jon asks if he is her prisoner. Dany replies that he isn’t… yet. Jon and Davos follow the Dothraki out of the room.

Varys informs Dany that their Ironborn and Dornish were ambushed on their way to Dorne. The ships, barring two or three that escaped, were sunk or captured. Their allies are either dead or captured.

Jon brooding on a cliff, and making Tyrion feel inadequate.

Later, Tyrion finds Jon brooding while standing on a cliff. He tells Jon that he came to brood over his failure to predict the Greyjoy attack, but Jon is making that difficult by looking a lot better brooding and making him feel like he is failing at brooding over failing. Jon says that he is a prison on the island. Tyrion replies that this is not the case, since Jon is free to roam anywhere on the island. Jon says that he can’t go back to his ship. Tyrion tries to explain, but Jon flatly says that he’s not interested in playing word games. Jon reiterates that the dead are coming for them. Tyrion says that he would help with the walking dead men if Jon helps with Dany’s missing fleet and murdered allies. Jon says that Tyrion probably doesn’t believe him, but Tyrion replies that he does. Jon recalls that Tyrion dismissed the stories of the dead when they first met. Tyrion says that he did dismiss the Army of the Dead as stories, and then Jeor Mormont and Jon saw them. He trusts the eyes of an honest man more than he trusts what everybody knows.

Jon asks for Tyrion’s help to convince people about the existence and threat of an enemy that they don’t believe in. Tyrion says that people’s minds aren’t made for problems that large. They feel relief in confronting comfortable, familiar monsters like Cersei instead of things like White Walkers and Night King. Jon says that he needs to help his people and he can’t do that from the island, so he’d like to leave. Tyrion thinks that it is unlikely that Jon became the King in the North by giving up that easily. Jon remembers how everybody advised him not to answer the summons of the Mad King’s daughter, and he came anyway like a northern fool. Tyrion explains how Dany could’ve sailed for Westeros much earlier, but she didn’t. She stayed back and saved people from horrible fates, some of whom are on that island. Tyrion asks Jon to explore the opinion of those people. Dany protects people from monsters, just like Jon. She won’t abandon her goals to fight an unknown enemy after a single meeting and the word of a stranger. It’s unreasonable thing to ask of her.

Jon realizes that he cannot convince Daenerys to come North with him. He’s about to leave when Tyrion stops him and asks if he has a reasonable request, so he suggests something that Tyrion can give him: Dragonglass.

“You should never believe in something simply because you want to believe it.” — A wise man
“You should never believe in something simply because you want to believe it.” — A wise man

Tyrion meets Dany in the Chamber of the Painted Table and informs her about Jon’s request. Dany is annoyed that they are talking about dragonglass instead of their allies. Tyrion says that Jon is a potential ally. He explains that dragonglass can be used against White Walkers and their army. Dany wants to know what Tyrion thinks about White Walkers. Tyrion says that he’d like to believe that Jon Snow is wrong, but a wise man once said, “You should never believe in something simply because you want to believe it.” Dany accuses Tyrion of presenting his own statements as ancient wisdom, but he says that he would never do that… to her. He believes Jon because Jon decided to come despite everybody advising against it. He asks Dany to let Jon mine dragonglass as a gesture of goodwill that might lead to an alliance, while they focus on Casterly Rock. Dany recalls Davos’s words about Jon taking a knife in heart and wonders what it meant, but Tyrion dismisses them as just words.

Dany is standing on the steps and watching Viserion and Rhaegal fly when she is joined by Jon. She tells him that she named the after her brothers, Viserys and Rhaegar. She says that dragons were considered extinct, but there they are. Jon realizes that Tyrion has been talking to her. Dany is determined to take the Iron Throne from Cersei, and she hasn’t changed her mind about which kingdoms belong to the throne. Jon replies that he hasn’t changed his mind either. Dany concedes and gives him permission to mine dragonglass, even providing men and resources to do so. Before leaving, Jon asks whether she actually believes him. She tells him to get to work.

“You better get to work, Jon Snow.”
“You better get to work, Jon Snow.”

In the Chamber of the Painted Table, Dany discusses her next possible course of action. She suggests that they should find Euron’s fleet and sink it. Varys explains that Euron destroyed a good portion of the Targaryen fleet. They cannot risk their remaining ships. However, Dany proposes attacking Euron with her dragons. Tyrion and Missandei advise against it, since Dany is too important and it only takes one well-aimed arrow to take her down.

Dany asks about the plan to take over Casterly Rock. Varys informs that the Unsullied will reach there soon, and they would be facing a difficult situation, since the enemy knows they are coming. Tyrion knows that the Lannisters will not let Casterly Rock be taken easily. The gates of Casterly Rock are impregnable, so it would be hard to go past the wall. However, even though Tywin Lannister was responsible for building Casterly Rock from ruins, the sewers were built under Tyrion’s supervision. While building the sewers, Tyrion decided to add a secret passage that he used to bring random women in or out of the castle undetected. He explains that the small band of Unsullied would infiltrate the castle using the secret passage. They would open the gates from the inside and let the rest of the army in. They will be outnumbered and at a disadvantage, but while the Lannisters fight out of fear, the Unsullied would be fighting for their queen and for freedom, so they will triumph.

Casterly Rock

A small band of Unsullied soldiers uses a boat to get to the cove where the entrance to the secret passage lies. They follow the passage to one of the main guard towers and kill the guards. They open the gates from the inside and let the rest of the army in, exactly like Tyrion planned.

“Give me ten good men, and I’ll impregnate the bitch.”
“Give me ten good men, and I’ll impregnate the bitch.”

The Unsullied fight the Lannister forces and slaughter them until none are left. Grey Worm senses that something is wrong, since their victory was too easy. He realizes that they only defeated a small number of Lannister soldiers who were guarding Casterly Rock. He stands on the wall and looks towards to sea, where he sees Euron’s Iron Fleet wrecking their ships. He grabs a wounded Lannister soldier and asks him about the whereabouts of the rest of their army.

Highgarden

The rest of the Lannister forces, led by Jaime Lannister, are shown to be marching towards Highgarden. Also marching with them are the armies of other lords of the Reach who have revolted against House Tyrell, such as Randyll Tarly. Olenna watches from the balcony as the combined forces approach her castle.

Jaime takes the fight to Olenna.
Jaime takes the fight to Olenna.

After the Tyrell forces have been defeated, their vaults and stores are raided for gold and other stuff. Jaime finds Olenna sitting alone in her study. Jaime confirms for her that the battle is over, while Olenna accepts that the Tyrell army wasn’t known for their fighting. She tells him that Tyrion and Daenerys expected to defend Casterly Rock. Jaime confesses that Casterly Rock holds little more than sentimental value for him. Besides, Euron burned the Targaryen fleet and Lannister army emptied the cellars before leaving, so the Unsullied won’t be able to hold Casterly Rock for long. Eventually, they will have to march across the Westeros to King’s Landing. The main Lannister army will be far away from them. Jaime recalls that Robb Stark did the same thing to him.

Olenna asks Jaime why Tywin didn’t just attack Highgarden when the goldmines ran out, though she remarks that she would be able to ask that question in person soon. She then asks if Jaime is going to execute her with the Valyrian steel sword that originally belonged to Joffrey. Remembering Joffrey, Olenna admits that she did unspeakable things, or allowed them to happen, in order to protect her family. She never regretted any of it, since they were necessary for the safety of House Tyrell. However, Cersei has done things that Olenna couldn’t even imagine. Olenna calls Cersei a monster and asks Jaime if he’s aware of it. Jaime says that Cersei may have been a monster to Olenna and others, but nobody will care what she has done when the war is over. Olenna realizes that Jaime really loves his sister and warns him that she will be the end of him. Jaime thinks that there is no point discussing any of that with her. Olenna says that she’s in a perfect position to discuss this, since whatever he says to her will not get out of that room, but she also understands that Jaime is too far gone to understand what a disease Cersei is.

Jaime is done with the chitchat and decides to end this. Olenna asks her how he’s planning to kill her. Jaime tells her about Cersei’s various ideas, such as whipping her through the streets and beheading her in front of the red keep, flaying her alive and hanging her from the walls of King’s Landing, and adds that he talked his sister out of those ideas. He takes out a small vial and empties it into Olenna’s glass of vine. Olenna asks if there will be pain. When Jaime confirms that it will be a painless death, Olenna promptly downs the entire glass. She recalls the circumstances of Joffrey’s death, listing the gruesome details of how the poison affected his body as he succumbed to his death. She reveals that she had never actually seen how the poison worked before, so she didn’t intend for Joffrey to die in such a horrible way. She asks Jaime to tell Cersei that it was her who really killed their son.

The episode title “The Queen’s Justice” refers to how Queen Cersei gets “justice” for her daughter Myrcella’s murder. In this episode, Euron Greyjoy delivers the “gift” that he had promised to bring Cersei in order to secure an alliance. This gift fulfills two purposes: The Dornish are Targaryen allies and capturing their leaders (and sinking their ships) weakens Daenerys, and Cersei gets the woman who murdered her daughter. Cersei takes delight in torturing Ellaria by killing Tyene in front of her using the same method that was used to kill Myrcella. In a true “Mad Queen” fashion, Cersei also gets aroused by the idea of inflicting revenge on her enemies, something that we saw before when she quietly enjoyed watching the Sept of Baelor explode. This is quickly followed by Cersei engaging Jaime afterwards and no even bothering with the fact that everybody knows about their relationship.

Although Euron doesn’t get what he wants, which is a marriage to the Queen of Seven Kingdoms, Cersei does make him the commander of the royal fleet. Euron’s intentions are clearly visible in his remarks to Jaime, which also shows that Euron is somewhat aware of Jaime’s incestuous relationship with his sister. Euron is also aware of what the smallfolk think about their leaders. When he marches through King’s Landing, he observes how the crowd takes joy in humiliating the “whores” and “murderers” of Dorne. He states it as a fact when Jaime tells him about Cersei’s Walk of Shame: they just like seeing severed heads of the enemies.

Mark Gatiss returns to reprise his role as Tycho Nestoris of the Iron Bank of Braavos. The Iron Bank previously appeared when Stannis Baratheon sought a loan from the bank for his war efforts, and when Mace Tyrell visited Braavos to renegotiate the terms of the loan the bank granted to the crown. As explained by Tycho, the Iron Bank is a powerful financial institution that makes strategic investments in ventures all across the world. Iron Bank is also famous for employing all sorts of tactics to recover their debts. Sometimes kings and princes borrow from the Iron Bank to run their kingdoms, but fail to repay their debts. In such cases, the Iron Bank diverts their support to new kings and princes who would overthrow the old regime and pay both the old debts and the new. An example of this can be seen when the Iron Bank decides to back Stannis in his campaign to take Iron Throne from the Lannisters and their puppet king, since the crown owes a tremendous amount of money to the bank and the Lannisters are unable to pay it back.

Since Stannis Baratheon was defeated in his attempt to conquer the North, the Iron Bank lost their investment. They need to find another way to recover their money, therefore they intend to bet on the strongest faction in the upcoming war for the Iron Throne. Cersei successfully convinces Tycho that the Iron Bank will never get its due from Daenerys. Daenerys is responsible for disrupting the slave trade in Essos. Although the Free City of Braavos—which was founded by former slaves of Old Valyria—has a vehement anti-slavery stance, the Iron Bank may not be completely immune from participating in the slave trade. Moreover, Daenerys is a Targaryen dragonrider supported by a Dothraki horde. Both dragonriders and the Dothraki have a history of taking what they want through conquest without being concerned about what they owe others. The Lannisters are more likely to repay their debts.

Highgarden, seat of House Tyrell
HIghgarden, seat of House Tyrell

While Euron Greyjoy is responsible for “decapitating the Dornish snake”, Jaime Lannister takes care of the other dissident faction: the Tyrells. Tyrion’s plan to infiltrate Casterly Rock was ingenious, but not unpredictable. Jaime predicts that Daenerys will try to take Casterly Rock in order to weaken the Lannisters. He decides to take a page from Robb Stark’s diary and baits the Unsullied into taking the castle with ease, while the bulk of his forces march to Highgarden and defeat the Tyrells, eliminating the domestic Targaryen ally forces. Without the Martells, the Tyrells, and the Greyjoys, Daenerys will have to fall back on fighting Cersei with “foreign invaders”. Elimination of the Dornish leadership also ends the Dorne storyline (which was heavily butchered in book-to-show transition).

This episode features the first meeting of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, two protagonists who have never interacted with each other before. (An interesting situation, since Jon happens to be Dany’s nephew.) Jon’s reunion with Tyrion results in obvious callbacks to their previous meeting in Season 1, which turns out to be a good thing since Jon and Dany are at odds with each other from the beginning. To Dany, Jon is some bastard who refuses to bow down to her and believes in zombies and shit. To Jon, Dany is a spoilt princess who wants to invade a country because she thinks it belongs to her. Tyrion can see that both arguments from both sides have their merits, which leads to Jon getting what he actually came for (i.e. dragonglass) without immediately bending the knee.

Finally, we get a glimpse of the situation in Winterfell. Sansa is establishing herself as a capable ruler by paying attention to what’s happening around her. Littlefinger, as always, continues to spin his web of intrigue. Fortunately for Sansa, she’s no longer alone. Bran returns to Winterfell after being away from home for so long. He has also begun to settle into his role as the omniscient Three-Eyed Raven, which is going to be crucial in the upcoming war against the winter.

In the next episode, Jon continues his stay at Dragonstone, while Daenerys takes action against the Lannisters.

Dragonstone

It’s a stormy night on Dragonstone. Daenerys and her cohorts are gathered in the Chamber of the Painted Table. Tyrion and Varys recall the circumstances of a similar night when Daenerys was born. Dany admits that she doesn’t recall anything about that night or the place. Dragonstone doesn’t feel like home to her. Tyrion assures that they won’t be in Dragonstone for long.

Varys informs Dany that Cersei controls fewer than half of the Seven Kingdoms and the Lords of Westeros despise her. Dany talks about how people used to tell her brother that Westeros was waiting for the true ruler and Viserys used to believe such things. She believes that Viserys would have invaded King’s Landing by now, but Tyrion reminds her that she’s not here to be Queen of the Ashes. She can take Westeros without bloodshed with help of her allies. Dany remembers that she never properly thanked Varys for bringing Dorne and Highgarden into the fold. She recalls how Varys served her father, Aerys II, and then served Robert Baratheon who overthrew Aerys. Not long after, Varys turned against Robert. Varys explains that Robert was neither mad nor cruel like Aerys, but he had no interest in being king. Dany recalls again that Varys also supported Viserys who was cruel, stupid and weak. She reminds him that he and her brother gave her away to the Dothraki and that he later tried to have her assassinated on the orders of King Robert. Varys tries to defend himself by saying that he was trying to survive. Tyrion argues in favor of Varys, but Dany claims that Varys is not a loyal servant, since he always conspires to replace one monarch with another.

Varys relates to his personal experiences as a commoner and states that his true loyalty lies with the people of the realm. If Dany expects blind loyalty from him, she can get him killed, but if she lets him live, he will serve her well. Dany asks him to swear that if she is failing the people, he will look her in the eye and tell her how she’s failing instead of conspiring behind her back. Varys swears this, and Dany swears in return that she will burn him alive if he betrays her. Suddenly, Grey Worm informs Dany that a Red Priestess from Asshai has arrived to meet her.

Everyone gets to the throne room to find Melisandre waiting for the queen. Melisandre greets Daenerys and Dany welcomes her since followers of R’hllor have been of immense help in Essos. Varys reveals that Melisandre served Stannis Baratheon before. Dany mentions that Mel is there on an auspicious day, since they have decided to pardon those who served the “wrong king”. Mel talks to Dany about the prophecy about the “Prince that was Promised”. Dany remarks that she’s not a prince, but Missandei, who is well-versed in multiple languages, explains that the word “prince” is gender neutral in High Valyrian. Dany asks if the prophecy refers to her. Mel explains that Dany has a role to play, as does Jon Snow, the King in the North. Tyrion recalls his first meeting with Jon. Mel further explains the circumstances of Jon being proclaimed King. She advises Dany to summon Jon. Tyrion agrees with the suggestion, since Jon has more reason to oppose Cersei. Dany asks Tyrion to invite Jon to Dragonstone and bend the knee to his queen.

The conquest begins.

In the Chamber of the Painted Table, Yara prods Daenerys into attacking King’s Landing with her army and dragons. Tyrion argues against letting the dragons loose on the city. Ellaria asks him to go back into hiding if he doesn’t have the stomach for war, and he reminds her that she started the war by poisoning his niece. Ellaria stands by her decision and expresses her regret that Oberyn died fighting for a Lannister. Dany interjects and demands that nobody will disrespect the Hand of the Queen. She repeats that she doesn’t want to be queen of the ashes. Olenna sarcastically responds that her daughter was a beloved queen and she was turned to ashes by Cersei. She goes on to state that Dany won’t get the Iron Throne by asking nicely, since politeness doesn’t stop anyone from being killed.

When asked how Dany plans to take the Iron Throne, Tyrion proposes that they will lay siege to King’s Landing from all sides and force Cersei to surrender. He also mentions that they would be using Westerosi army, since Cersei would expect them to use the foreign army and use that fact to bring people on her side. The Ironborn would go to Sunspear and transport Dornish soldiers to King’s Landing. The Dornish army and the Tyrell army would attack King’s Landing together. Olenna asks him why Dany bothered to bring her own army from Essos if she was going to use their Westerosi army. Tyrion reveals his plan of using the Unsullied to attack Casterly Rock, the seat of House Lannister. Everybody agrees with this plan and Dany dismisses everyone except Olenna.

“You’re a dragon. Be a dragon.”
“You’re a dragon. Be a dragon.”

Dany talks to Olenna in private. Dany knows that Olenna is not there out of love, but for revenge. She assures Olenna that they will bring peace to Westeros, but Olenna knows that there has never been peace under any of the kings who came before. While Tyrion is a clever man, Olenna has seen many clever men in her life and ignored them all. She mentions that Dany is not a sheep like the other Lords of Westeros. She is a dragon and must be one if she wants to rule.

Grey Worm is in his room polishing his knife when Missandei comes to say goodbye, since he is leaving for Casterly Rock. Missandei wishes him good fortune and is about to leave when Grey Worm stops her. He reveals that it is hard for him to say goodbye to her because she is his weakness. He tells her how the Masters learned the greatest fears of young slaves and exposed them to those fears in order to create strong Unsullied soldiers. Grey Worm didn’t have any fears, so he wasn’t the biggest or strongest, but he was the bravest, until he met Missandei. Now he is afraid. Missandei replies that she is afraid as well. After some hesitation, Grey Worm kisses her. She disrobes and proceeds to remove his clothes as well. He stops her from removing his trousers, but she insists that she wants to see “it”. She leads him to the bed and they have sex.

King’s Landing

Queen Cersei invites the Lords of Westeros and warns them about the impending danger of the Targaryen queen invading their home. She warns them about the Dothraki savages, mindless Unsullied soldiers and fierce dragons. She mentions how Dany crucified hundreds of “noblemen” in Essos and fed them to her dragons. She urges them to stand with their queen. Randyll Tarly comes forward and points out that Dany has three full grown dragons, same as Aegon when he conquered the Seven Kingdom. Cersei looks at Qyburn who informs that they are working on a solution.

Jaime meets Lord Tarly afterwards and thanks him for coming. Tarly introduces Jaime to his son Rickard Dickon. Jaime asks Lord Tarly to serve as his ranking general in the upcoming battles and fight the queen’s enemies, including Olenna Tyrell. Randyll mentions that he’s not an oathbreaker or a schemer. Tarlys don’t stab their enemies in the back or cut people’s throats at weddings. Randyll mentions that he has known Olenna since they were children, but Jaime asks him to choose between the Crown and foreign invaders. He expects him to make the right choice.

Later, Qyburn takes Cersei to see the collection of dragon skulls kept beneath the Red Keep. Cersei recalls that Robert had the skulls removed from the throne room, but he would still come down there to look at them, even bringing his whores on occasions. They stop before the giant skull of Balerion the Black Dread, the dragon used by Aegon the Conqueror. Qyburn mentions that one of Daenerys’s dragon was wounded by spears in fighting pits of Meereen, and if dragons can be wounded, they can be killed. He removes a cloth to reveal a ballista placed right in front of Balerion’s skull. He asks Cersei to pull a lever. Cersei pulls the lever and a bolt flies, hitting and piercing the massive skull.

Oldtown

In the Citadel, Archmaester Ebrose is examining Jorah Mormont’s Greyscale infection. Ebrose says that Jorah should have cut off his arm to stop the infection from spreading. Jorah asks about how long he has. Ebrose gives him 10 to 20 years, although Jorah’s mind would be gone in six months or less. Sam mentions Shireen Baratheon’s Greyscale infection to him. The Archmaester chides Samwell about his ignorance regarding Greyscale. Shireen’s infection was caught by Maester Cressen in the early stages, while Jorah’s infection has advanced a lot and is beyond their skills. If he were a commoner, he would be shipped to Valyria immediately. Since he’s a nobleman, he’d be granted an additional day to contemplate his choices (such as suicide). Before leaving, Sam asks if Jorah would like them to contact his family. Jorah says that he is estranged from his family.

Sam finds out that nobody gives a shit about curing Jorah’s Greyscale.
Sam finds out that nobody gives a shit about curing Jorah’s Greyscale.

Later, Sam is in the library helping Archmaester Ebrose with books. The Archmaester comments on how Maester Ch’Vyalthan was a dreadful writer but an excellent researcher, while Maester Faull was a brilliant stylist but invented most of his stories. He even mentions the title of his own book, “A Chronicle of the Wars Following the Death of King Robert I”. Sam thinks that the title could be a bit more poetic, but the Archmaester says that maesters are not poets. Sam mentions that he may have found a way to cure Jorah’s Greyscale: a procedure in the study of rare diseases by Archmaester Pylos that resulted in advanced Greyscale being cured in at least two cases. However, Ebrose informs him that Archmaester Pylos died from Greyscale. His procedures were considered far too dangerous and subsequently banned.

In his cell, Jorah is writing a letter to his khaleesi when Sam enters the cell with a cart. Sam introduces himself as a brother of the Night’s Watch and discloses that he knew Jorah’s father, Jeor Mormont. He drinks a bit of rum and offers the rum to Jorah. He then opens a book written by Archmaester Pylos and asks Jorah to take off his shirt. He also mentions that he’s there secretly and if anybody finds out, they both would be in trouble. Jorah asks if he has done something like that before, but Sam says that nobody is going to try except for him. Jorah bites down hard on the piece of cloth given to him. Sam starts peeling away the upper layer of infected tissue so that he can apply the medicinal ointment.

Winterfell

Young boys and girls being trained in archery

Young boys and girls are being trained in Winterfell courtyard. Jon shows Sansa a letter sent by Tyrion, an invitation to come to Dragonstone. He asks Sansa about her opinion on Tyrion. Davos suggests that Dany’s dragons could be useful in fighting wights.

Maester Wolkan gives Jon Sam’s letter from the Citadel. Jon gathers the Northern Lords and tells them about Sam’s letter, in which Sam mentioned the dragonglass mountain on Dragonstone. He then produces Tyrion’s letter that came from Dragonstone, in which Tyrion invited him to meet Daenerys. He tells everyone about Daenerys’s intentions to take the Iron Throne from Cersei, as well as her army and three dragons. He then declares that he is going to accept Tyrion’s offer. They need dragonglass, but more than that they need allies, which Daenerys can provide. He has decided to ride to White Harbor with Davos and sail for Dragonstone. Sansa reminds Jon that Mad King Aerys invited their grandfather to King’s Landing and roasted him alive. She warns Jon that Daenerys intends to conquer the Seven Kingdom, including the North, so the invitation could be a trap, but Jon believes Tyrion. Lord Royce and Lord Glover object to the idea of their king trusting another ruler based on their previous experiences, while Lady Mormont urges him to stay in the North. Jon explains that there is a risk in whatever he is doing, but the threat of the White Walkers is more important than anything else. They will need Daenerys’s help. Sansa asks him to send an emissary instead of going himself, but Jon believes that only a king can convince a queen to help them. Sansa continues to object, but Jon tells her that he is leaving both Winterfell and the North in her hands. She is a Stark and she will be the ruler until Jon returns.

In the catacombs beneath Winterfell, Jon is staring at a statue of his father when Baelish arrives. Petyr believes that Tyrion can be trusted. He starts talking about how even though he and Ned had their differences, they both loved Catelyn. She didn’t love Jon, though she vastly underestimated him. Jon says that Petyr doesn’t belong down there, but Petyr thinks that Jon should be grateful that the Knights of Vale saved the day in the battle. When Littlefinger mentions that he loves Sansa just like he loved Cat, Jon grabs him by throat and pushes him against a wall. He threatens to kill Baelish if the latter even touches Sansa.

Jon walks out of the catacombs. In the courtyard, Davos and some men are waiting on their horses. Jon climbs a horse and waves goodbye to Sansa as they leave for White Harbor. Petyr comes out of the catacombs and stares at Sansa.

Riverlands

In the Inn at the Crossroads, two travelers are talking about Daenerys and her dragons. Hot Pie spots his friend “Arry” sitting alone. Arya asks him to sit and takes the pie he’s carrying. She praises the pie and recalls her own “pie making” incident. Hot Pie asks whether she met Brienne. Arya asks for some ale and tells him that she’s going to King’s Landing. Hot Pie tells her how Cersei blew up the Great Sept and wonders why Arya is not going to Winterfell. Arya is still under impression that the Boltons have the castle, but Hot Pie tells her that her brother Jon defeated the Boltons with a wildling army. Arya is surprised to hear this. She tries to pay and leave, but Hot Pie refuses to accept money from his friend.

Arya makes a decision.

Outside the Inn, Arya climbs her horse and briefly contemplates continuing her journey to King’s Landing before turning around. On her way to Winterfell, she stops in the forest and sets up camp. Her horse starts acting weird. Arya draws her sword in anticipation of an attacker. Suddenly, she is surrounded by a pack of wolves led by a direwolf. Arya recognizes the direwolf as Nymeria, her own wolf. She tells Nymeria that she’s going home and asks the wolf to come with her, but Nymeria leaves with her pack of wolves.

The Narrow Sea

In the Narrow Sea, the Greyjoy siblings are sailing to Sunspear on their ship Black Wind, along with their portion of the Iron Fleet.

The Sand Snakes argue about who they want to kill. Tyene mentions that her mother would want Cersei for herself, while Nymeria (the snake, not the wolf) wants the Mountain. Elsewhere on the ship, Ellaria is drinking Ironborn liquor with the Greyjoys. She compares the drink to piss and offers to treat them with the best Dornish red wine when they reach Sunspear. She asks whether Yara has ever been to Dorne. Yara replies that she has been there a few times. Yara doesn’t like it when Ellaria asks Theon to fill her glass, though he doesn’t mind. Ellaria asks Theon what he will be when his sister becomes the queen. Yara says that he will be her advisor and protector. Ellaria starts flirting with Yara in front of Theon, making him uncomfortable. Yara asks Theon to leave. Out of nowhere, something hits their ship.

Yara and Theon come out on the deck to find that their fleet is being attacked by their uncle Euron’s fleet. Euron’s ship, the Silence, rams into Black Wind and Euron boards their ship using a corvus. Ironborn men follow Euron and start fighting the other Ironborn. Tyene comes out on the deck, but Yara sends her to protect Ellaria. Euron’s men follow Tyene. Ellaria asks them to kill her quickly, but the Ironborn capture her and Tyene alive.

Yara’s ships are being burned by Euron’s fleet. Obara and Nymeria encounter Euron who fights both of them and kills them. Euron keeps cutting people down with his axe when Yara starts fighting him. Eventually, Euron ends up holding Yara with his axe on her throat. He sees “little Theon” fighting and calls him out. He challenges Theon to come and free Yara, but Theon sees the massacre around him and remembers the torture inflicted by Ramsay. He temporarily becomes “Reek” and, instead of saving Yara, jumps overboard. He finds a piece of wood to float on and watches as his entire fleet burns. Obara is impaled on the prow, while Nymeria hangs from it. Euron’s fleet starts sailing for King’s Landing.

The episode title, “Stormborn”, refers to Daenerys. Daenerys was born to Rhaella Targaryen on the island of Dragonstone during Robert’s Rebellion after her father, King Aerys II, was killed. Since she was born on a really stormy night, she’s also called “Daenerys Stormborn”. This episode explores the effect of Daenerys’s arrival in Westeros and marks the beginning of her conquest.

In King’s Landing, Queen Cersei invites the Lords of Westeros and provokes them with lies and half-truths about the Targaryen Queen. She warns them about the mindless Unsullied soldiers who would destroy their castles and Dothraki heathens who would rape and enslave their women. She even turns the bannermen of House Tyrell against Olenna. Cersei’s plan is to compel the Lords to side with the crown using the threat of a foreign invasion. Tyrion predicts this and decides to fight Westerosi soldiers with Westerosi soldiers by laying a siege to the capital using the Tyrell and Dornish armies. Since Jaime’s Lannister forces would be busy fighting Dany’s Westerosi army, Casterly Rock would be unguarded. Tyrion decides to use this opportunity to capture Casterly Rock with help of Grey Worm and his Unsullied. However, there is an unanticipated flaw in their plan: Euron Greyjoy.

Tyrion’s original plan was to send the Greyjoy Fleet to Sunspear and then transport the Dornish army from Sunspear to King’s Landing, but he had no knowledge of Euron’s Iron Fleet being in the vicinity. Euron, who went to King’s Landing to meet Cersei, was just waiting as Yara’s fleet passed by in the Narrow Sea. In the previous episode, Euron proposed Cersei and promised to bring her a “gift” to woo her.  Capturing important people from the opposing side and gifting them to the queen would serve as a token of his support.

Euron’s ship, the Silence
Euron’s ship, the Silence

The naval battle of the Iron Fleet and the Greyjoy Fleet is the first major conflict in this season. An interesting part about this ambush is that both fleets are comprised of Iron Island natives, so it’s essentially Ironborn vs. Ironborn. The naval insignias of both ships look similar due to the kraken motif of the Greyjoys, with one significant difference being the red eye on Euron’s flag. (The red eye is a reference to Euron’s moniker “Crow’s Eye”. In the books, Euron has lost one of his eyes and wears an eyepatch—like a stereotypical pirate.)

Since there are Ironborn on both sides who look pretty much the same, this conflict becomes confusing as it’s hard to differentiate between friends and foes. However, Euron’s crew is comprised entirely of mute people. According to an anecdote, Euron personally ripped out tongues of every person serving on his crew. Euron’s crew does the same thing to every opposing Ironborn they capture during this battle. This practice of cutting off tongues is what earned Euron’s ship its name, the Silence.

This battle offers another callback to previous events, this time for Theon Greyjoy. Ever since Theon escaped Winterfell and returned to Iron Islands, he has been struggling to get his shit together. He doesn’t want leadership anymore. He’d rather stay by his sister and do what she asks. Ramsay’s reprogramming hasn’t completely worn off yet, as Theon still shows signs of subservience. When the violent conflict pushes him into a fighting role and he sees his sister’s life being threatened, he doesn’t attack. Instead, he decides to jump overboard and swim away from the conflict while hoping to stay alive and get another chance to save his sister. Instead of showing his courage and taking chances with his sister’s life, he chooses the cowardly but pragmatic option of retreating.

Theon becomes “Reek”
Theon becomes “Reek”

In the next episode, Jon Snow arrives at Dragonstone and meets Daenerys Targaryen. It’s the meeting that everyone has been waiting for. Also, Euron returns to King’s Landing with his prisoners, and the Unsullied target Casterly Rock.

The Dragon Queen Returns to Westeros

Valar dohaeris, ñuha raqirossa. Game of Thrones is back with a seventh season, and so am I with a recap and related information. While the previous seasons of GoT had 10 episodes, this one will end at 7. Some episodes will be longer than normal if it’s any consolation. Let’s begin with a quick look at the previous season.

Last Season on Game of Thrones: Cersei blows up the Sept of Baelor and kills the Sparrows, the Tyrells, and a whole lot of nobility. She crowns herself the Queen of Seven Kingdoms just as Jaime returns to King’s Landing. Following his victory against the Bolton army, Jon Snow is proclaimed the King in the North by the Northern lords. Euron Greyjoy returns from his voyages, kills his brother Balon and is elected King of the Iron Islands. Yara and Theon steal the best ships of the Iron Fleet and escape from Euron. Sandor Clegane turns out to be alive. Looking for a purpose in life, he joins the Brotherhood Without Banners. Samwell Tarly travels to Oldtown in order to train at the Citadel of the Maesters. Beyond the Wall, Bran and Meera escape the Night King and his undead army. Daenerys Targaryen allies with the Greyjoy siblings, the Martells, and the Tyrells as her fleet departs for Westeros. Arya returns to Westeros and infiltrates the Twins in order to kill Walder Frey.

The Twins

Walder Frey organizes another feast, but how?
Walder Frey organizes another feast, but how?

Walder Frey organizes another feast within the same fortnight and invites every Frey who participated in the Red Wedding. He proposes a toast and pours everyone the finest, proper Arbor Gold wine for the “proper heroes”, except his young wife (named Kitty in promotional materials). He goes on to say how proud he is of his men who slaughtered the Starks. However, he mentions that they didn’t slaughter every one of the Starks. He says that they should have ripped them all out, root and stem. Suddenly, Frey men start dropping dead one by one. “Walder Frey” removes a mask to reveal Arya Stark’s face.

Arya tells Kitty Frey that when people ask what happened there, she should tell them that the North remembers, that winter came for House Frey. With that, Arya leaves the scene of massacre.

While riding away from the Twins, Arya hears a man (played by British singer Ed Sheeran) singing a song. When she comes closer, she discovers a band of Lannister soldiers. They invite her to join them and offer her food. During a conversation, Arya reveals that she is going to King’s Landing. The soldiers laugh at that, since King’s Landing has lost all its charm ever since Cersei took power. The soldiers have been sent to help the Freys, although Arya learns that they are just normal people with normal lives. One of them has a dad on a boat. Another has a wife who’s having a baby. Arya drinks some blackberry wine and casually mentions that she’s going to King’s Landing to kill the queen. The soldiers stare at her for a second and then start laughing, thinking that she’s joking.

The Wall

Beyond the Wall, an army of White Walkers marches south, with undead men, horses, and giants. This turns out to be a vision of Bran Stark.

Bran and Meera reach the Wall.

Bran and Meera reach the Wall where they are greeted by Edd and the brothers of the Night’s Watch. Edd thinks that they’re wildlings, but Meera introduces them. Bran tells Edd about the Army of the Dead and the Night King, even mentioning First of the First Men and Hardhome where they fought the wights. Edd decides to let them in.

Winterfell

Jon asks the northern maesters to collect dragonglass and put it to use. He also asks that everyone aged 10 to 60 start training for fight, even girls and women, since he can’t have only half the population in the North fighting the White Walkers. Lord Glover objects to putting a spear in his granddaughter’s hand, but he is talked down by Lyanna Mormont. Lady Mormont decides that every man, boy, woman and girl on Bear Island will start training for war. Next Jon decides that they need to increase their defenses. Since the Wall hasn’t been properly manned in centuries, he asks the Free Folk to man the castles, Eastwatch-by-the-sea being the closest to Hardhome. Tormund remarks that now they are the Night’s Watch and agrees to go there. The first two castles after the Wall are Last Hearth and Karhold, held by Umbers and Karstarks. Lord Royce suggest that these castles should be demolished because the Umbers and the Karstarks betrayed the Starks. Sansa, on the other hand, suggests that the castles should be taken from their current Lords and given to other loyal houses. However, Jon refuses to strip the families of their ancestral homes. Sansa questions Jon’s logic for forgiving treason. Jon says that Smalljon Umber and Harald Karstark both received their punishment, death, on the battlefield. He calls forward Ned Umber and Alys Karstark, both current heirs of their respective houses, who pledge their loyalty to him.

Jon takes his role as DAKINGINDANORF quite seriously.

Later, Jon chides Sansa for questioning his authority as a King and undermining him in front of the northern Lords. Sansa mention that Joffrey wasn’t really a good king even though he never let anybody question him, and Jon is a lot better ruler than Joffrey. She says that Jon needs to be smarter than his father and brother otherwise he’ll suffer the same fate as them. Suddenly, Maester Wolkan informs him about a raven from King’s Landing.

After crowning herself Queen, Cersei sends a raven to Jon, summoning him to King’s Landing in order to bend the knee, or he will suffer the fate of all traitors. Sansa says the Jon has been so focused on North that he has forgotten about enemies from the South, but Jon says that he is focused because he has actually seen the Night King and the Army of the Dead. Besides, the Lannisters are a southern army and there are a thousand miles that they will have to range in the winter in order to reach the North. Sansa is adamant that Cersei will find a way to kill Jon one way or another. For a moment, Jon thinks that Sansa admires Cersei.

Brienne is sparring with Podrick in Winterfell courtyard when Tormund walks up to them. Brienne is momentarily distracted and Pod hits her, so she throws him on the ground in response. Sansa is watching them from afar when Littlefinger arrives and comments on Brienne’s skills. Sansa asks him immediately what he wants. Littlefinger says that he wants her to be safe, to which she replies that she is safe and has everything she could want, except for some peace and quiet perhaps. When Brienne approaches them, Sansa dismisses his attempt to seize the last word. After Baelish leaves, Brienne asks Sansa why he’s still here. Sansa replies that they need Knights of Vale, although she knows what exactly he wants.

King’s Landing

Queen Cersei is getting a large map of Westeros painted on the floor when Jaime comes to see her. Jaime mentions that their father made him memorize every city, town, lake, forest and mountain. Cersei says that now it is all theirs to take. Jaime hasn’t talked to Cersei since he came back. She wonders whether he’s angry or afraid. She informs him that Daenerys has appointed Tyrion as the Hand and they’re sailing towards Westeros. Jaime tells her that they will probably land at Dragonstone, the ancestral seat of House Targaryen, which is in east. Cersei remarks that apart from the east, they also have enemies in the south (Ellaria Sand and the Sand Snakes), west (the Tyrells of Highgarden), and north (Jon Snow and Sansa Stark). Jaime says that they don’t have enough food for their men and horses, while the Tyrells do. The Tyrells will even stand beside the Dothraki and the Unsullied if it means they’re on the winning side. Jaime notes that Cersei is the queen of three kingdoms at best.

Cersei plans to launch a dynasty following a war, but Jaime reminds her that their children are dead. There is no Lannister line that can inherit the throne. When Jaime starts talking about Tommen, Cersei angrily responds that he betrayed them by supporting the Faith and then committing suicide. They are the last Lannisters who count. Jaime replies that even Lannister needs allies, and they don’t have many, especially after the Frey massacre.

Cersei invites Euron Greyjoy to King’s Landing. Jaime is skeptical of Cersei’s decision, since the Ironborn are not trustworthy. Cersei tells him that Euron is not there to steal anything; Euron is there for a queen.

Euron Greyjoy has a proposal for the Queen
Euron Greyjoy has a proposal for the Queen.

In the Throne Room, Euron recounts how Yara and Theon betrayed him and stole his ships and gave them to the Dragon Queen. He compares this to how Tyrion betrayed the Lannisters and hopes to join forces with Cersei so that they can defeat their enemies together. Jaime intervenes and reminds him about the Greyjoy rebellion. He remembers that Euron was the one who started the rebellion by burning the Lannister fleet. Euron in turn praises Jaime’s skills and bravery in the battle, even though Jaime was killing Ironborn men. He mentions that he wouldn’t have gone into exile if not for his defeat in the rebellion, and he wouldn’t be the greatest captain on the 14 seas.

Euron says that he knows Cersei doesn’t care about Iron Islands, but she does care about the Iron Fleet. Euron offers the Iron Fleet in return if Cersei accepts his marriage proposal. Cersei declines his proposal on account of his oathbreaking and murder of his own brother. However, Euron promises to return to King’s Landing with a “priceless gift” that will convince her.

In the Citadel of the Maesters, Samwell Tarly begins his training as a maester. His duties include menial work such as arranging books in the library, cleaning chamber pots, and serving food in the dining room. While in the library, he longingly looks at a locked grate in the restricted section, the keys to which are only possessed by maesters.

While weighing the organs extracted from the corpse, Sam asks the Archmaester if he had considered his proposition about granting him access to the restricted section. He reveals that even though he actually saw the White Walkers and their Army of the Dead, everybody is the Citadel is skeptical about their existence. Ebrose says that people in the Citadel doubt everything because it’s their job, though he admits that what Sam says is too similar to the old accounts of the Long Night to not be true. However, he goes on to explain that the maesters are responsible for preserving the memories of the world. People have always thought that the world was going to end whether it was during Robert’s Rebellion, or when Aegon Targaryen conquered Westeros. When the White Walkers attacked first during the Long Night, everybody thought that the end was near, but the Wall stood through it all and it’s still standing in the way. Ebrose dismisses the conversation and leaves Sam alone to clean up after the autopsy.

After being dismissed by the Archmaester, Sam is walking around with his cart when he notices a maester sleeping with his key unguarded. He steals the key and uses it to enter the restricted section of the library.

In his quarters in Oldtown, Sam is reading through the books when Gilly asks him to get some sleep. Sam is reading about dragonglass when he comes across a map of Dragonstone with a mountain of dragonglass. He immediately proceeds to write a letter to Jon.

Next day, Sam is collecting empty utensils from cells of the sanitarium when he is confronted by a shadowy figure infected with Greyscale. The figure, Jorah Mormont, inquires whether Daenerys has arrived in Westeros.

Riverlands

The Brotherhood Without Banners is riding towards north. Thoros says that it’s a bad night to be outdoors. Sandor Clegane mocks Thoros and his faith in the Lord of Light. They come across a house and Beric thinks that it’s a nice place to stay for the night. However, the Hound remembers his previous encounter with the occupants of the house and hesitates. (He beat them up and stole their money.)

They enter the seemingly abandoned house and discover corpses in a corner. Beric assumes that the occupants were starving and the father killed his daughter before killing himself. Sandor reminisces about the first time he met Beric and mentions that there is nothing special about Beric. He wonders why the Lord of Light keeps bringing Beric back from death, since better men have died. Beric doesn’t understand how Lord of Light works, but he knows the Lord wants him alive.

Thoros asks Sandor to come closer to the fire. The Hound, who is afraid of fire, blames his luck that he ended up with fire worshippers. Beric calls it divine justice, but Sandor says that if there was divine justice, Beric would be dead and the little girl would be alive. When Sandor walks up to the fire, Thoros asks him to look into the fire. Sandor keeps staring at the fire and sees a vision of the Wall and the Army of the Dead.

Later, Thoros wakes up to the sound of digging. He gets out of the house to see Sandor digging a grave using a shovel. Sandor lays the dead bodies into the grave and start filling it with dirt. Thoros grabs a shovel and helps him. Sandor tries to offer a prayer for the dead, but he doesn’t remember. He just ends up saying sorry to them.

The Princess of Dragonstone stands before her ancestral home.

Daenerys’s fleet arrives at Dragonstone. She travels via a boat and sets foot on the shore. Dany and her acquaintances march through the front gates of the Dragonstone castle and the courtyard. Dany pulls down a hanging “burning stag” banner and throws it on the floor. She enters the throne room to find the ancient Targaryen throne of her ancestors. She walks up to the throne and then turns to enter the Chamber of the Painted Table. She examines the eponymous table and says to Tyrion, ‘Shall we begin?’

The episode title “Dragonstone” is a reference to the fortress located in the Narrow Sea at the entrance to Blackwater Bay. It first appeared in the show in Season 2.

Dragonstone was the original seat of House Targaryen in Westeros. It had been colonized and fortified as the westernmost outpost of the Valyrian Freehold. Being a volcanic island, Dragonstone was an ideal location to raise dragons. After Aegon conquered the Seven Kingdoms, Dragonstone served as the seat of the heir apparent of the Targaryens, known as the Prince of Dragonstone. Daenerys Targaryen, born on the island of Dragonstone during the rebellion, became the last Princess of Dragonstone.

After Robert Baratheon was crowned King, his younger brother Stannis took Dragonstone from the remaining Targaryen forces and was eventually named the Lord of Dragonstone.

Dragonstone is not ideal for growing significant crops or livestock farming. The main food source for the island’s inhabitants is the fish available in the waters of Blackwater Bay. It’s essentially a military fortress. However, its position at the entrance of the Bay is strategic. A Royal Fleet stationed at Dragonstone can quickly come to the aid of King’s Landing when summoned. Unfortunately, when Stannis decided to transport his remaining forces north to the Wall, he left Dragonstone unguarded. With Stannis dead and nobody there to protect the island, Dragonstone is retaken by Dany when she lands there and just walks through the front gate.

Sam makes an important discovery.
Sam makes an important discovery.

Another important discovery about Dragonstone is made by Samwell Tarly. In the last season, Sam reached Oldtown where he started training at the Citadel of the Maesters. In this episode, we see a montage of Sam performing menial tasks such as arranging books in the library, serving meals, and cleaning chamber pots. Since he is not a maester yet, he cannot access the restricted areas of the library for his research on White Walkers. Moreover, nobody in the Citadel believes his claims of having encountered an actual White Walker. Archmaester Ebrose (played by Jim Broadbent, who also played Professor Slughorn in Harry Potter), who does believe Sam, offers a neat explanation for the inaction of maesters: they think that everything will be fine regardless. Some have drawn parallels to the real-life phenomenon of climate change denial. Still, Sam is not the one to back off easily. He “borrows” a key from a sleeping maester and uses it to “borrow” some books from the restricted section. While flipping through the books, he finds information about a mountain of dragonglass (obsidian) on the island of Dragonstone. (Stannis earlier mentioned to Sam that he would start mining dragonglass on the island.) This increases the probability of a Jon-Dany alliance in the future.

In the next episode, Melisandre will return, and Jon will make a decision regarding Daenerys.

He rode through the streets of the city,
down from his hill on high,

O’er the wynds and the steps and the cobbles,
he rode to a woman’s sigh.

For she was his secret treasure,
she was his shame and his bliss.

And a chain and a keep are nothing,
compared to a woman’s kiss

For hands of gold are always cold, but a woman’s hands are warm…

For hands of gold are always cold, but a woman’s hands are warm…
